What are the Different Types of Dental Implants?

Most dental implants are made from pure titanium and are generally around the same size as the root on an affected tooth. Implants can however come in a variety of different sizes to suit each person’s teeth and requirements, but most are around 5 to 11mm for rear teeth and between 10 and 15mm for the others.

While titanium is the most widely used material, there are new kids on the block in the form of ceramic and zirconia, however, these are in the early stages of development and remain a relatively new concept, so it’s best to stick with the tried and trusted material for the moment.

Rare cases call for rarer implants, and if you have a particularly poor upper jaw-bone then we can anchor a dental implant into the cheekbone, which is up to three times longer than typical implants. This is rather uncommon but is something we offer at Dovetail.

There are numerous factors that contribute to which dental implant you may need, such as where in your mouth the missing teeth are and how heavy your bite is. All of this can be examined in a consultation with Dovetail which you can book today with us on 0191 261 9911.

Timescales for Dental Implant Treatment

Timescales for dental implant treatments can vary and depend on the health of your bones.

Generally speaking, if there is plenty of healthy bone available to work with, then we can fit an implant to a tooth or bridge in a single visit to our cosmetic dental surgery in Newcastle.

However, for the most part, a better result is achieved by carefully removing infected roots or scar tissue before placing an implant into the affected area a few weeks later. We tend to wait up to 8 weeks for the bone to fuse with the new implant before creating a new crown or bridge to fit atop the implant.

And in case you were worrying about the pain of a dental implant, while there is some discomfort in the treatment, it is overall more painless than having a tooth removed and any pain or discomfort can be managed with over-the-counter painkillers.

We also have lots of nifty tricks if you need to temporarily fill a gap in the front teeth, so you feel comfortable smiling and speaking whilst waiting for your implant to heal.
